History of Science and Technology

Project: Research Vessels “Meteor” I-III – Continuity and Change in German Oceanography

Supervisors: Dania Achermann / Thomas Morel

Project summary

Based on the three research vessels by named “Meteor” I – III, commissioned in 1924, 1964, and 1987, the project investigates the history of ship based oceanography in 20th century Germany. Changes of the content and processes of the scientific field of work as well as of the institutions, surrounding the ships are in center of attention. Examining the causes and consequences of these changes can provide insights into the larger context of history of science and technology such as relationships between scientists, interdependencies between humans and technology, as between humans and nature. The theories and terms of the Historical Institutionalism will be used to identify, to question and to explain the processes.
